Introduction
As an educator, I am always looking for publications that help drive home the points that careful instruction on project management processes, rules, standards, and best practices teaches. But these often lack the real-world context of appropriate industry case studies to bring these points to life. Case Studies on Project Management in Practice provides this context and more.
Overview of Book’s Structure
Case Studies on Project Management in Practice offers readers illustrative stories of real project situations requiring resolution and provides a decision-making framework based on the available information.
But first, the editor brings readers- up to date on the shift in businesses toward “projectifying” work that formerly was handled in more traditional department hierarchies.
A very useful feature is the variety of global industries represented in the cases. They range from a municipal water company in Ecuador to a property and casualty company in the Upper Midwest of the United States, a construction contracting company in the Middle East focused on digital innovation in its work, and public road works in Senegal. With increased globalization in business, project managers can observe how other cultures handle various project situations.
Interestingly, the cases do not stop at the various industries. While the cases may feature specific industries, the main story in one case focuses on ethics and difficulties in team dynamics, another on issues arising between Scrum Masters and Product Owners, and a third on deciding to terminate a project during project delivery. As project managers learn from situations similar to those they face, these cases are not only instructive but also help others solve problems in their work.
Each case provides thoughtful questions for prompting discussion and is an excellent source and time-saver for educators.
Highlights
Any project manager holding PMI certifications must continually update their knowledge and earn a minimum number of professional development units (PDUs) between certification renewals. To guide project managers as they accumulate these PDUs, the Project Management Institute developed the PMI Talent Triangle®, which specifies the number of PDUs required in three project management learning and competency areas for project managers to renew their certifications. A highlight is the organization of the case studies into the three PMI competency areas: Ways of Working, Power Skills, and Business Acumen.
