Program and Project Managers

The PM World Journal (PMWJ) can be a useful resource for practicing program and project managers.  The PMWJ periodically showcases best practices, case studies and descriptions of how others have solved program and project management (P/PM) problems; provides educational content for developing professionals and teams; includes new information from around the world of professional project management; provides opportunities to increase credentials and reputations through publishing, and offers several opportunities to gain positive visibility.

CASE STUDIES, SOLUTIONS & BEST PRACTICES

Best (or better) practices are often subjective, or dependent on many factors including the maturity of an organization in the use of professional P/PM.  Nevertheless, a lot can be learned from reading or studying how others have solved a specific problem or issue.  Case studies offer an excellent way to learn about the experiences of others.

Each month’s PMWJ also includes Advisory Articles offered by experts, consultants and experienced program and project managers.  These articles are intended to offer potential solutions to real-world P/PM issues.  Each advisory article will be useful to someone, perhaps to you or someone on your team.

Featured papers, student papers and second editions all generally offer new and educational information about P/PM approaches, methods, models and theories.  They are often based on considerable research.  These too can offer educational and useful reading for practicing program and project managers and their teams.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING – CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Continuous improvement in organizational performance today often requires increased productivity, new methods and technologies, new or different resources, new approaches, and even new information.  Project managers and their teams should embrace continuous learning in order to develop new knowledge and skills, to stay abreast of changes in the P/PM field, and to manage increasingly complex programs and projects more successfully.  Each month, the PMWJ will include new articles and papers from around the world, with new P/PM topics, new perspectives, new knowledge.  Whether individuals and teams learn a little or a lot, continuous learning can only help program and project managers, and their projects and teams, be more successful.

LOW COST PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Every program and project manager must worry about the professional care and development of their human resources, their teams of administrators, experts and professionals.  Most professionals are anxious to advance their careers, through education, professional certifications and other means.  In today’s economy, with increased pressures on costs and financial performance, fewer programs and projects have much budget for professional development.

The PMWJ offers a low-cost (FREE) alternative for professional learning and development.  Read and share PMWJ articles within your team.  Read the case studies, articles, papers and news to keep up with the PM profession.  Support the authoring of articles and papers by your program or project team members, which can bring positive benefits and visibility to authors and organizations alike.

STAY ABREAST WITH P/PM INTELLIGENCE

Many factors can influence the success or failure of programs and projects today, especially those involving multiple teams, multiple international locations, multiple stakeholders, significant complexity, complicated environmental considerations, new technologies, large budgets, long schedules and other conditions.  In addition, with rapid changes continuing in the P/PM field, information about new developments can be useful for many.

Program and project managers need to stay abreast of changing conditions that might affect their projects.  Each month’s edition of the PMWJ includes news related to research, education, professional activities, events and other news affecting P/PM around the world.  Reports from industry and stories about programs and projects are included.  While it might not be everything you need to know, you will always find something interesting or useful.

ESTABLISH PERSONAL CREDENTIALS & CREDIBILITY

Authors of articles and papers can establish themselves as experts in the subject of their writing.  Program and project managers who openly discuss their approaches, experiences and solutions establish credibility with readers, many of whom may be potential customers or stakeholders.  Published papers can also be shared with existing customers, executives and other stakeholders, often with positive results.

When senior program and project managers author professional papers, their organizations are often viewed as more mature and more capable.  Many consulting organizations provide white papers for customers for just this reason.  If you want to establish your credentials as a P/PM expert, or more credibility in the P/PM professional field or marketplace, consider authoring an article or paper for the PMWJ.

GAIN VISIBILITY FOR YOUR TEAM OR ORGANIZATION

Most organizations value positive publicity.  If you have some news that can be shared about your program or project, your team, your experiences and successes, submit an article or story for publication.  If you or members of your project teams have some important experience or knowledge, showcase that in an article or paper.  Gain some visibility!  New contacts, opportunities or even business may well result.
