Abstract
The healthcare industry is undergoing a digital revolution driven by the advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). AI is redefining traditional approaches, from disease diagnosis to drug discovery. The success of these initiatives depends heavily on the expertise of data scientists, AI researchers and engineers. These individuals play a pivotal role in collecting, cleaning, training and analyzing vast amounts of healthcare data to extract valuable insights. By leveraging advanced machine learning and data analytics techniques, they enable the development of AI solutions that can improve patient outcomes and optimize healthcare delivery. This article examines the critical roles these professionals play in developing and delivering healthcare AI applications. Drawing on insights from 11 experts, it also highlights the intersection of data science, AI and project management in this domain.

- Introduction and Study Design
The complexity of clinical decision-making and the rising demands on healthcare systems have led to a growing need for innovative solutions. Artificial intelligence has become an important tool in addressing challenges in healthcare practice. Over the past decade, advances in computing, access to large healthcare datasets and improved algorithms have enabled AI to tackle critical clinical questions with high accuracy. Examples include AI systems that assist in medical imaging, predict patient deterioration and support clinical decisions. These developments are improving patient outcomes and changing how technology is used in healthcare.
The development of AI solutions in healthcare involves a range of stakeholders, including clinical experts, business leaders, project managers, AI researchers and data scientists. Data scientists, AI researchers and engineers are responsible for processing large datasets, designing algorithms and developing machine learning models, ensuring their alignment with clinical and business objectives. The work of these technical teams is closely tied to project management, as the successful delivery of AI solutions requires collaborate with various stakeholders, careful coordination of tasks, adherence to timelines and alignment with project goals.
The 11 data scientists participating in this study bring a diverse range of technical experience to healthcare AI projects. Their expertise spans mid-career professionals with 6-10 years of experience to seasoned experts with over 20 years in the field. The primary roles identified include Research/Data/AI Scientists, Senior Scientists/Engineers and those working in other specialized capacities.

Dr. Deepa Bhide, MBBS, DCH, PMP, has over 20 years of professional experience where she has blended medical practice and research with IT and Project Management. She juggles consulting, training, and operations and is proficient in clinical medicine, project management, and healthcare information technology. Starting her career as a medical practitioner, she has worked with varied organizations before her current stint as director and clinical expert for Inventurus Knowledge Solutions.
Deepa’s growing interest and work in these areas, born from her day-to-day patient interactions, helped her view Project Management as a backbone of progressive healthcare. Her paper on “Patient Care – A Project Management Perspective” has received global recognition and acclaim. With a physician background as a solid foundation to leverage IT/PM skills and knowledge, Deepa has blended her broad-based experience and learnings to present a unified, holistic, and wholesome view of Project Management and Healthcare, a cross-domain confluence. Through various webinars, events, talks, and writings across platforms, Deepa has been an evangelist in championing global project management during the COVID-19 pandemic.
A Gold medalist from Osmania University for standing First in the MBBS course, she pursued her DCH in Pediatrics and Child health. Deepa has served various roles in local and global Project Management Institute (PMI) regions. She remains actively engaged with PMI and has been a participant and speaker for various national and global meetings and online events.

Hrishikesh Deshpande

Hrishikesh Deshpande is an AI/ML Leader with a 14-year career trajectory in leading the research and development of AI-driven healthcare innovations. His interests include machine learning, computer vision and team leadership. He is passionate about building AI solutions that can significantly impact human lives.
Hrishikesh holds a master’s degree from Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and a Ph.D. from INRIA Rennes France. His work at A3 Remote Monitoring Technologies Mumbai led to the development of a tele-cardiology product, enabling diagnosis for patients in remote areas and saving hundreds of lives. At Philips Research Hamburg, his technological innovations and team leadership enabled the successful transfer of several AI solutions for product integration and led to the filing of over 30 patents. . His research has resulted in over 10 publications in renowned AI and medical imaging journals and conferences.
Hrishikesh is an active volunteer in the scientific community as well as the PMI and HBS Online networks, where he mentors future leaders, facilitates knowledge sharing and promotes professional excellence.
