Conference Season in the UK

There have been three project management and PMO conference announcements in the last month, reminding us all that it is time to get out and about post-COVID, meeting up with others whilst taking time out to listen, think and learn about our professions.

The Association for Project Management (APM) are in Birmingham in June 2023 with a conference focused on “Change Changes”, a title which reflects the uncertainty and disruption in the world today.

The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) are in Aberdeen in May 2023 with a conference focused on, “Shaping our Energy Future – Project Managing the Change”

The House of PMO have their own conference too, simply title, “The PMO Conference” which is held in London, in June 2023. Its focus is purely on those working in PMOs today.

Hybrid Events the Way Forward?

There has been a reluctance by many project professionals to start attending networking events in person following the pandemic and the subsequent increase in working from home (hence not being in cities or towns where events are taking place)

At the end of February, Eileen Roden (partner at House of PMO) and I were asked to speak at a British Computer Society (BCS) event entitled, “Getting into Project Management” in their London HQ in Moorgate.

The House of PMO is a professional membership organisation for those working in PMOs today. Initially set up in 2013 and called PMO Flashmob, it transitioned to the House of PMO in 2021. The House of PMO was established to bring PMO people together, creating a home for PMO professionals where they can develop themselves, support the development of others and contribute to the development of the PMO profession. How is this achieved? By developing standards – such as the PMO Competency Framework; providing professional development (the Essentials qualifications); arranging events and networking opportunities (such as weekly events and an annual PMO Conference); providing a platform to learn from each other (the annual PMO Managers Lunch); publishing works, supporting research, tracking trends and providing essential knowledge for PMO practitioners working today.
