End of an Era + AI Alert

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

14 July 2025

By Dr. Kenneth Smith

Dear David,

For the past seven years you have afforded me the opportunity to add to the pages of the PMWJ the knowledge & experiences gleaned during and after my extensive project management career; as well as allowing me to share my opinions – for better or worse — on various topics and issues with which I am, or were, acquainted.  However, having covered the waterfront on those issues — at least once, and some several times — while this may not be my ‘last post’ I am ready to fade away, as at this juncture I think I have run the gamut on what I can usefully contribute.

The concepts, tools & techniques of yesteryear are still pertinent, and for Project Management newbies, and other readers – as well as for posterity – in addition to past PMWJ editions, my thoughts on PM responsibilities, roles, practices, tools & techniques are also readily available in my two books illustrated below: currently languishing on Amazon’s ‘worst seller’ list.

However, AI is now rapidly replacing my pedantic verifiable processing & analysis, and — coupled with today’s computerized approaches — holds promise for greater efficiency in managing projects. Nevertheless, with the Journal as a prime source of — and reference for — all things Project Management-related, accuracy & accountability concerns continue. I caution against unquestioning reliance on AI-output dominance gleaned from — or concocted by – obscure, unverifiable sources.  A case in point is this ‘close to home’ gem I encountered on July 4 when I Googled ‘PMWJ July 2025 via Chrome to see if the July edition was available.
