Overview of Book’s Structure

Contemporary Project Management: Organize / Plan / Perform Second Edition breaks down 457 pages into 15 chapters that are subdivided into three parts; Part 1: Organizing Projects, Part 2: Planning Projects, and Part 3: Performing Projects.

Part 1 is primarily concerned with project selection and prioritization, organizational structure, culture and roles and project charters, which are how projects are officially approved. Part 2 introduce the reader to the project planning as outlined in PMBOK 4th edition. Part 3 introduces the politics of managing a project throughout its lifecycle, such as leading and managing project teams, determining project progress and results and how to close out a completed project.

Each chapter concludes with key terms from the PMBOK 4th edition Guide, chapter review questions, discussion questions, PMBOK 4th edition Guide Questions, exercises, and integrated example projects that provide the reader with real world scenarios.

Highlights

In addition, book includes Microsoft Project Professional 2010 Student CD-ROM with a trial version of Microsoft Project 2010 at no additional cost. The practical use of that key project management application is fully integrated into 8 chapters of the textbook.

Highlights: What I liked!

This is the most solid book I have ever seen on the subject. Immediately after I opened the book and came across the information, I realized that the book was deep in meaning. At the beginning of each chapter, there are a focused list of PMBOK topics and the most important project management concepts.

“…Perhaps the best way to understand the contemporary approach to project management is to learn how the contemporary approach to project quality management developed.” (Chapter 11. P.291)”.
