Welcome to the January 2025 PMWJ

WELCOME

By David Pells

Welcome to the January 2025 edition of the PM World Journal (PMWJ), the 148th monthly edition of this practitioner-oriented publication. This month’s PMWJ is another diverse and interesting edition, with 30 new works by 43 different authors representing 15 different countries. The new editions this month bring our totals to 5,307 works by 2,073 different authors representing 90+ countries published in the PMWJ to date and archived in the PM World Library.

Welcome also to 2025, the 13th year of PMWJ publication.  Hopefully it will be a lucky year, but who knows.  With all the political and economic turbulence around the world, anything might happen.  One thing though has been true over the last five decades, whether the changes are upsetting or revolutionizing, no matter the condition of economies or organizations, projects and project management are increasing – in both numbers and importance. We in the PM field are not only surviving and thriving, we are intimately involved in creating the future. That is both thrilling and challenging, because with both innovation and leadership comes responsibility. So let us focus on creating positive changes in our profession, our organizations and our communities. Be good, work on good projects, do good work and create a good future.

I am proud to say that this edition of the PMWJ is another good one, so I think we are starting the year right. Please check the table of contents; you will quickly see what I mean.

Two Letters to the Editor are included in this edition, one on the subject of the recently released draft of PMI’s PMBOK 8the edition, the second a complimentary shout out for the PMWJ.  Both were well received and, I hope, worth reading. If you agree or disagree, let us know.

Six Featured Papers are included this month.  Three are by academic authors in Nigeria where there is a very robust set of undergraduate and graduate degree programs in project management at multiple universities. I am happy to provide an increasingly attractive publishing outlet for graduate students and researchers to share their research results with the PM world quickly and easily; while we don’t subject papers to strict scientific or theoretical criteria or scrutiny, we expect these papers to be original, fully referenced, professionally written and edited, and, most importantly, be potentially useful for practitioners (professionals, businesses, public authorities).  That said, many of our featured papers address new PM topics, common issues from new emerging perspectives and sometimes even new PM concepts.

In that context, please see the new paper by Massimo Pirozzi and his author team in Italy on ‘Effective Project Communications’; Prof M.F. Harake in France’s new paper on ‘Integrating Cybersecurity in Project Management’; and the UK’s Kieron Chadwick’s new take on the often-argued ‘accidental project manager.’

Four Series Articles are included by loyal authors who are continuing their contributions from previous years, which we highly respect.  Dr. Stanislaw Gasik in Poland has authored a new article in his series on “Let’s Talk About Public Projects”, this month’s article titled “Public projects are full of risks”. Oliver Lehmann in Germany has authored a new article in his well received series on “Project Business Management”, this one titled “Resilience in Project Management, Part 1: The Cost of Chaos”.  Martin Hopkinson in the UK has penned another brief guide in his “Practical Project Risk Management” series, this one on “Business Case Risk.”  Hugo Minney in UK has penned “Measuring and Reporting on the Main Benefits Measures: A Comprehensive Guide for Project Professionals”, the latest in his important series on “Implementing BS202002: Benefits Management in Programs, Projects & Portfolios.” Don’t miss reading our series articles, which are often enlightening and entertaining, and always informative.
