WELCOME

By David Pells

Welcome to the August 2024 edition of the PM World Journal (PMWJ), the 144th monthly and 12th Anniversary Edition of this practitioner-oriented publication. This month’s PMWJ is another diverse and interesting edition, with 41 new works by 55 different authors representing 17 different countries. The new editions this month bring our totals to 5,122 works by 1,995 different authors representing 90+ countries published in the PMWJ to date and now archived in the PM World Library. Wow! This is a very full edition.

One Letter to the Editor is included by Kik Piney in France with “Comments on Stephen Devaux’s paper on The Program-Level Breakdown Structure.” This is an old school discussion on project controls; if you are involved with project cost and schedule control, read this piece.

Two Interviews are included this month, courtesy of PMWJ correspondent Yasmina Khelifi in Paris and Ipek Sahara Ozguler in Istanbul. Yasmina has conducted a lengthy interview with Dr. Deepa Bhide on the topic of AI & Project Management in Healthcare.  Dr. Bhide has been a regular contributor to the PMWJ for many months now; this is an opportunity to learn more about her background, experience and knowledge.  Ipek’s interview is with Mr. Luigi Rosa, AVP with Amtrak, America’s nation-wide passenger rail operator. Mr. Rosa discusses the Frederick Douglass Tunnel Program, Amtrak’s largest initiative for which he is the PM, as well as the recent bridge disaster in Baltimore Harbor. Check out this interesting interview.

Ten Featured Papers are included this month, including six by academic researchers in Nigeria, three by returning authors (Massimo Pirozzi, Alan Stretton and Prof M. F. Harake) with significant new works and one by a new author (Louis Arguelles in Virginia).  These good papers are a mix of academic and professional research, by professors, graduate students and very senior project management practitioners.  The topics vary from directly to indirectly related to program and project management. Rather than mention all of the titles and authors, I can say that these are substantial works representing many hours of research and writing.  So please review the titles and summaries and read one or two.

Seven Series Articles are included by authors in five countries.  Dr. Deepa Bhide in India and her co-author Hrishikesh Deshpande, PhD in Germany are back with another powerful article titled “Role of Project Managers and PMOs in AI for Healthcare (Part 2) in Dr. Bhide’s series on AI and Healthcare. Dr. Stanislaw Gasik in Poland has authored the next in his series on “Let’s Talk About Public Projects”, this month’s article titled “Competing or working together for common success? Partnership in public projects”. Martin Hopkinson in the UK has penned another brief guide in his “Practical Project Risk Management” series, this one on “Impact and Probability Estimating.”

“The Dark Side of Implementing Project Management Changes” is the latest article (and a good one) by Dr. Harold Kerzner and Dr. Al Zeitoun in the USA in their series on “The Future Project Culture”.  Oliver Lehmann in Germany has authored another interesting and useful article in his series on “Project Business Management”, this one titled Make the Project Customer Happy! Really Happy!!” Dr. Hugo Minney in UK has authored “Seven Deadly Sins of benefit management (what organizations do that doesn’t work for them).” “Biases and Data in Project Management” is the third article in their series on “Issues for Project Managers and Teams to be aware of (Artificial Intelligence Use in Project Management)” by Ivano di Filippo (Italy), Dr. Josh Ramirez (USA), Darrell Mesa (USA), Claudia Alcelay (Spain) and Rebecca Winston (USA). Don’t miss these powerful articles by our widely respected series authors.
