Ref: PM World Journal as useful platform for sharing knowledge and experience
Dear Mr. Pells,
I hope this message finds you well. I want to begin by expressing my gratitude for the invaluable platform you’ve created through the PM World Journal, which has become a cornerstone for fostering meaningful dialogue and innovation in the project management community. Your published works, particularly your critiques of PMI and the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), have resonated deeply with me and have been instrumental in shaping some of my own reflections.
Your article “Project Management Needs a Higher Purpose” particularly stood out to me, as it articulated ideas that had been taking shape in my mind but had not yet been fully formed. Your call for greater inclusivity, adaptability, and a broader vision for the profession struck a chord with my own journey as a practitioner and thinker in this field.
When I first encountered PMBOK in the early years of my career, I was inspired by the promise of a global standard that could provide clarity and structure to the complex world of project management. At that time, it seemed to offer the perfect solution for navigating the challenges ahead. However, as my career progressed—particularly around 2016 when I was tasked with standardizing and revolutionizing processes in a large software development organization—I began to encounter the limits of these frameworks.
Our team faced recurring issues: endless replanning cycles caused by rapidly shifting requirements, cumbersome change management processes, and a disconnect between the structured methodologies of PMBOK and the fast-paced, iterative nature of the tech industry. Hybrid methodologies were emerging during this period, blending Agile and traditional approaches, but integrating them effectively was a challenge. The guidance available, including in PMBOK (then in its 5th Edition), often felt insufficient for the dynamic and evolving environment we were navigating.
