On the Synergy between Generative Artificial Intelligence and PMWJ

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

By Massimo Pirozzi

24 March 2025

Dear David,

This time, I wanted to share with you a thought – a “light” one, but perhaps not too light – about the new “augmented” role that PMWJ can play in this AI era.

A short premise. As you know, I’ve been passionate for some time now about the topic of generative Artificial Intelligence applied to Project Management – so much so that I’m exploring it from multiple perspectives. I teach courses on it, but I’ve also earned several specializations and academic credentials from internationally renowned institutions. I’ve had some success as a speaker, I’ve written and/or contributed to a few articles for the Project Management Journal, and above all, I strive to stay constantly up to date – which is no easy task and requires a lot of hands-on experimentation!

In this scenario, I’ve recently been exploring the new advanced “Deep Search” features introduced by some of the most popular Generative Pre-Trained Transformers (GPTs). On various PM-related topics, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised to see that PMWJ/PMWL papers are often suggested as references far more frequently than what typically happens with traditional search engines (which are often influenced by sponsorships and SEO strategies).

This leads me to a spontaneous observation: in the age of AI, where LLMs also act as “democratizers” of knowledge (not without their own challenges, of course, in terms of ethics, bias, intellectual property etc.), high-quality open-access content such as that of PMWJ/PMWL can take on an augmented – and even primary – role in spreading culture. This may even outpace books or paid journals, which risk being sidelined in this new ecosystem – unless, paradoxically, they are cited and thereby amplified through open-access articles, reviews, or posts.

I’ve tried to explore these aspects more deeply by “cornering” my AI Assistant into revealing how it works. It confirmed that open-access sources are indeed favored, in accordance with one of the six main criteria used to select sources and/or references – namely, Transparency and Verifiability. The other criteria are Reliability and Authoritativeness, Objectivity and Neutrality, Timeliness and Relevance, Clarity and Structure, and Consistency Across Sources.

This means that the number of new readers could potentially grow, especially in response to prompts that specifically and directly relate to project management topics – particularly considering that today, over 20% of Project Managers regularly use AI. This creates a great potential additional audience, which adds to the more limited and traditional one that comes through standard search engines. While the number of sources or references provided by LLMs is necessarily limited, it is also more qualified.
