Dear Editor,

Thank you for re-publishing my 1988 paper on Greenhouse Comes to Banjarmasin. Three years after I wrote it, I had lunch at a small restaurant accessed only by river, overlooking the Strait of Malacca, with about 2 m of steps from the small pontoon wharf. Three months later I went again, after three days of rain and at king tide. The water was lapping over the seats as we ate. And I understood then that floods combined with tides had a far more impact than just the tides I had seen in Banjarmasin.

Then in 2010, my son’s mother-in-law lost her home near a beach at Melolo, NTT, with a three-meter storm surge, and I knew then that increasing extreme weather was far more worrisome than sea-level rise. And as I write, my son and his family are still isolated after Cyclone Seroja without electricity or communications unless they drive 60 km to the next town on higher land.

Big decisions are needed to determine appropriate mitigation against extreme weather. But once decisions are made, there is enormous project management effort needed. And it is not project management as usual. I wish the profession all the best in determining how we should be prepared for such work.
