PMI Madrid held their Monthly meeting on April 27th, 2023
On April 27, 2023, the PMI Madrid Chapter held its monthly meeting at Microsoft’s offices in Madrid, in La Finca. On this occasion the speaker was Alfonso Bucero, who made a presentation on “the importance of governance in a project” focused on a real case. About sixty people attended in person to this meeting, and more than a hundred in virtual mode.
The presenter explained the components of a project’s governance and the impact they believe they have on the success of the project. At that meeting, questions arose about the difficulty of working with executives in organizations and how to get more management support on projects. The speaker explained that the implementation of a Governance system in projects is a challenge for the Project Manager, having to work as a team with the Sponsor, with the management of the organization, with the PMO and with the rest of the stakeholders. The speaker reinforced the Stakeholder Principle presented in the Seventh edition of the PMBOK and its usefulness to get stakeholders involved from start to finish of a project.
There were a lot of questions and interaction in the room, showing interest in this topic. The attendees showed that in few Spanish companies a project governance system is adequately implemented. It also became clear that we as project managers can do much more than we think by frequently communicating these challenges to executives in the organizations we work for. Alfonso Bucero, MSc, CPS, ACE, PMP, PMI-RMP, PfMP, SFC, IPMO-E, PMI Fellow, is an International Correspondent and Contributing Editor for the PM World Journal in Madrid, Spain. Alfonso was the founder, sponsor, and President of the PMI Barcelona Chapter until April 2005 and belonged to PMI’s LIAG (Leadership Institute Advisory Group). He was the past President of the PMI Madrid Spain Chapter and then nominated as a PMI EMEA Region 8 Component Mentor. Alfonso was a member of the PMIEF Engagement Committee. Alfonso has a Computer Science Engineering degree from Universidad Politécnica in Madrid and is studying for his Ph.D. in Project Management. He has 32 years of practical experience and is actively advancing the PM profession in Spain and Europe. Alfonso received the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award on October 9, 2010, the PMI Fellow Award on October 22, 2011, and the PMI Eric Jenett Excellence Award on October 28, 2017.
