Spanish Project Management Status Report, 2021
Even when business and personal times are complicated, project management professionals stay together to move forward and support all members of Spanish associations of project managers. Webinars, interviews, virtual coffees, and monthly presentations are some of the Spanish Chapters of PMI activities.
As practitioners of project management, all of us are concerned about developing our profession better and better. We have to be curious and investigate the environment where we move directing projects and know the broad spectrum of project management in our country. Keeping us updated on our profession, our market, our clients, and the possible methodologies to be used should not be an obligation but devotion. Some professionals describe the current situation of society as a complex, sad, hostile situation. I instead encourage you to review the survey report (accessible at www.pmi-mad.org ) and observe that we have made good progress in our country and still have a long way to go. The oldest in the profession does not understand the current situation as a total change of paradigm where none of the above is valid or the other way around.
More than 800 people did the survey. It demonstrates the interest in participating and knowing more about state of the art in Spain. The growth of PMP certification is an exciting fact observed in the graphs. There has been significant growth in hybrid methodologies, and not all organizations invest in the development and professional training of their project managers. All these data explained in detail in each of the graphs in the report make us see the need for us, as project managers, not to stop and take the initiative in our organizations. All project managers can do a lot more than we think. Twenty years ago in Spain, there were practically no project offices; today, more than 53% of respondents have a project office that adds value to the organization.

Alfonso Bucero, MSc, CPS, ACE, PMP, PMI-RMP, PfMP, SFC, IPMO-E, PMI Fellow, is an International Correspondent and Contributing Editor for the PM World Journal in Madrid, Spain. Mr. Bucero is also founder and Managing Partner of BUCERO PM Consulting. Alfonso was the founder, sponsor and president of the PMI Barcelona Chapter until April 2005, and belongs to PMI’s LIAG (Leadership Institute Advisory Group). He was the past President of the PMI Madrid Spain Chapter, and then nominated as a PMI EMEA Region 8 Component Mentor. Now he is a member of the PMIEF Engagement Committee. Alfonso has a Computer Science Engineering degree from Universidad Politécnica in Madrid and is studying for his Ph.D. in Project Management. He has 32 years of practical experience and is actively engaged in advancing the PM profession in Spain and throughout Europe. He received the PMI Distinguished Contribution Award on October 9th, 2010, the PMI Fellow Award on October 22nd 2011 and the PMI Eric Jenett Excellence Award on October 28th, 2017.
